Australian Media Discovers Cycling
Here in Australia the Aussie media have just discovered a brand new sport - cycling!!! Suddenly faces that are familiar to those of us who watch SBS such as Cadel Evans, Stuart O’Grady, Robbie McEwen and Mick Rogers are showing up on the ABC and Channel 9.
Phil Anderson must be wondering where all this great Aussie support was back when he was doing it proud and largely alone back in the 80s.
Anyway, first there were the 60 minutes mob telling us about these bicycle riders and the “ridiculous speeds” that they ride at (derr, yeah…dat’s how ya win!). The gist of their story was about the lamentable luck that the Australians were having in this year’s Tour de France, talking to Stuey, Mick and Robbie, titling the story Tour de Crash.
The transcript of Tour de Crash can be read here
or you can watch the entire 60 Minutes feature here.
And then on the ABC on Monday 6 August Andrew Denton chatted with Cadel Evans, his mum and his grandmother on Enough Rope.
The entire transcript of the Cadel Evans interview with Andrew Denton has been put up on the Enough Rope website. I missed the actual episode on Monday night unfortunately but the excerpts that I’ve seen seemed a little disjoineted due to the fact that the interview was done via satellite with Evans in Venice.
Even though Denton obviously is not a cycling fan, he still gives good interview and with Cadel’s mum and grandmother in the studio with him, included their perspective of watching their son/grandson from half a world away nicely.
But Denton asks the tough questions such as how to take a natural break (Denton just calls it “having a wee” and also (ever the Aussie) asks about sledging in the pack. Naturally, he ventures into the question of drugs in the sport and Evans’ opinions and thoughts.
