Vuelta a Burgos – Stage 2

The Vuelta a Burgos (Cat 2.HC) is held from August 14 - 18.

The scond stage of the Volta a Burgos took the field from Areniscas de los Pinares to Lagunas de Neila over a distance of 149km. Juan Mauricio Soler has continued his outstanding recent form to take the stage, attacking on the final climb of the day and then holding out Carlos Castaño (Karpin-Galicia) and Daniel Moreno (Relax-GAM) by 17 seconds.

Once again an early move was made by 4 riders, Iker Flores Galarza (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Vasil Kiryenka (Tinkoff Credit Systems), Rodrigo Garcia Rena (Fuerteventura - Canarias), Juan Jose Cobo Acebo (Saunier Duval - Prodir) who, by the 74th kilometre had stretched out their lead to 3'45". They shared the points over the first three Category 3 climbs, but then on the Category 1 climb of the Alto de Rozamientos they were captured by the peloton that was being led by Alejandro Valverde's Caisse D'Epargne team.

However it was Juan Mauricio Soler who made the decisive attack with 2 kilometres to go and rode away to a 17 second victory over Carlos Castaño Panadero (Karpin Galicia) and José Ángel Gómez (Saunier Duval - Prodir). Valverde was unable to match the power over the final few kilometres and eventually finished 42 seconds behind Soler.

Tour of Germany – Stage 5

The 2007 Tour of Germany is held from August 10 thru August 18.

The 5th stage of the Tour is the one we've all been waiting for with the stage culminating in the leg-deadening climb up Rettenbachferner to finish after 157km of riding.

Stage winner was a bit of a surprise in David López García (Caisse D'Epargne) but the rider who followed him were unexpected, namely GC leader Jens Voigt who was only 12 seconds behind. Robert Gesink (Rabobank) filled the 3rd placing at 20" to move him up to 3rd in the overall GC as well.

Casualties for the day included Levi Leipheimer (Discovery Channel) who lost a minute to Voigt, Linus Gerdemann (T-Mobile) who cracked early on the final climb to finish more than 5 minutes behind and Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner) who lost 2 and a half minutes.

Stage 5 Profile

Stage Summary
The first real attack of the day started after 30 kilometre and was the first promising breakaway attempt that looked as though it had any chance at succeeding. Alan Pérez (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Bingen Fernández (Cofidis), Carlos Da Cruz (Française Des Jeux), Vladimir Efimkin (Caisse d'Epargne), Matej Mugerli (Liquigas), Lloyd Mondory (Ag2r Prévoyance) and Christoph Meschenmoser (Skil-Shimano). This group would work well together taking their lead out to aas much as 4 minutes over the field that was being led by Discovery Channel.

With around 30km to go Efimkin (Caisse D'Epargne) made an attack taking Pérez with him but their lead by this time was reduced severely and the 1'50" they had over the chasers was never going to be enough. On the early slopes of the Rettenbachferner they were caught by a peloton that had disintegrated to only around 20 riders.

It was then down to the pre-rave favourites to battle out the final 10km of climbing. Continued accelerations whittled the field down to only López García, Leipheimer, Voigt, Gesink, Ten Dam, Bertagnolli Pfannberger and Sørensen and it was López García who made the decisive attack which no one could match.

Surprisingly Leipheimer then began having problems and this spurred Voigt into action setting off after López García. Damiano Cunego attempted to cover the German hard man but was unable to match his strength. As Voigt continued to attack the mountain Gesink also began to struggle and eventually left Voigt to continue the chase alone.

Team CSC site - Their heading says it all "Fantastic performance by Jens Voigt".
Caisse D'Epargne - David Lopez Garcia was understanably thrilled with his first ever victory as a professional rider.

Tour de l’Ain – Stage 3

The 3rd stage of the  2007 Tour de l'Ain is the Queen stage of the Tour, a 128km stage finishing atop the HC Le Grand Colombier, a 1051 metre climb with a gradient that occasionally kicks up to around 14 percent.

Victory went to John Gadret (AG2R Provoyance) who finished 35 seconds ahead of tam-mate Ludovic Turpin with Bauke Mollema (Rabobank - Continental) a further 5 seconds behind in 3rd place. The win moves Gadret into the GC lead giving him a 39 second advantage over Turpin and a 46 second lead over 3rd placed Mollema.

Previous Tour leader Beat Zberg still leads the Points Classification by 3 points over Gadret. Gadret was already heading the Mountain Classification and his victory up Colombier earned him enough points to extend his lead to a commanding 19 points.

Vuelta a Burgos – Stage 1

The Vuelta a Burgos (Cat 2.HC) is held from August 14 - 18.

The first stage was a 150km route starting and ending in Miranda de Ebro taking the riders over a Category 2 climb before a fairly flat run to the line. Mikhail Ignatiev (Tinkoff Credit Systems) took the stage victory after participating in a large breakaway group. He tore away from his fellow escapees to win the day by 34" from Daniel Moreno (Relax - Gam) and Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne).

An early breakaway group of 3 was formed and by the 67 kilometre mark Mikel Artetxe (Fuerteventura - Canarias), Luis Pasamontes (Unibet.com) and Maurizio Bellin (Team L.P.R.) had increased their lead to 1'28, but this was short lived and the peloton was soon back together again.

The climb up the Col Du Portello de Busto was won by Daniel Moreno Fernandez (Relax - Gam) from Mikhail Ignatiev (Tinkoff Credit Systems) and David Garcia Dapena (Karpin Galicia) was 3rd over the top, giving Moreno the lead in that classification.

The Sprint Classification points were shared by the 3 early breakaways with Artetxe taking two wins for the overall lead from Bellin and Pasamontes.

Volta a Portugal – Stage 9

The 2007 Volta a Portugal (Tour of Portugal) runs from 4 to 15 August over 10 stages.

The 9th stage is 154km long, short in distance but long in difficulty, ending in a tough finish at the top of the E category Alto Da Torre. The field also had to cover the Category 1 climb of Alto Do Carrazedo which is situated 50 km from the finish.

The day belonged to Eladio Jimenez (Karpin-Galicia) who rode away from the field up the Alto Da Torre to win the day by 13 seconds from Xavier Tondo (LA MSS). GC leader Candido Barbosa (Liberty Seguros) was unable to match the pace set by Jimenez and dropped back to finish in 3rd place 55 seconds behind.

The win has moved Jimenez into 1st place overall, 33 seconds ahead of Barbosa and 37 seconds ahead of Tondo with the Individual Time Trial to come.

He may have lost the leader's jersey but the points classification is safely in Candido Barbosa's keeping with an unassailable 90 point lead.

The Mountains Classification on the other hand has suddenly close right up to a margin of only 1 point with Andre Cardoso (Fercase/Rota Dos Moveis) managing to cling to his lead. The points Jimenez picked up by being first over the Category 1 Alto Do Carrazedo and the Alto Da Torre rocketed him up the classification standings.

A battle within the race was being fought out in the Young Rider classification with Tiago Machado (Riberalves-Boavista) only losing 53" to John-Lee Augustyn (Barloworld) to now have a lead of 1' 12".

Volta a Portugal – Stage 8

The 2007 Volta a Portugal (Tour of Portugal) runs from 4 to 15 August over 10 stages.

The 8th stage in the Volta a Portugal (perhaps more aptly titled the Volta a Barbosa) was a 157km ride from Aveiro to São João da Madeira, over another course that should suit the sprinters.

As has been the case 3 times before, the stage winner was Candido Barbosa who took out a large bunch sprint from Marco Bandiera (Lampre-Fondital) and Paride Grillo (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare). The win served to increase his lead in the Overall GC to 27 seconds and also gives him a massive 57 point lead in the Points Classification.

The Mountains Classification remained largely unchanged at the top of the list with Andre Cardoso (Fercase/Rota Dos Moveis) unable to secure any points but Barbosa, his nearest rival, only added 2 points.

The Young Rider Classification is still headed by Tiago Machado (Riberalves-Boavista) who still holds a 2'05" lead over John-Lee Augustyn (Barloworld)

Tour de l’Ain – Stage 2

The 2007 Tour de l'Ain is held over 4 days and 4 stages each of them providing some challenge for the competitors.

The 2nd Stage of the Tour took the riders from Lagnieu to Bellignat for a distance of 164 kilometres. Along the way they had to cover a series of climbs with 2 Category 4 climbs, 2 Category 3 climbs and a Category 2 climb.

Discovery Channel's Brian Vandborg prevailed in a tough day by managing to outsprint Frédéric Bessy (Cofidis) and Dmytro Grabovskyy (Quickstep-Innergetic) into 2nd and 3rd place respectively. The Overall GC is still headed by Beat Zberg who managed to retain the 10 second lead he held after the first stage.

In the Points Classification Giovanni Visconti (Quickstep-Innergetic) picked up enough points by finishing in 5th place to move him to the head of the competition ahead of Bessy. With so many classified climbs in the stage, a new leader has emerged although the lead is only by 1 point. Jérôme Pineau (Bouygues Telecom) led over the 4th Category Col De France, the 3rd Category Côte De Matafelon and the 2nd Category Côte De Samognat to pick up enough points to promote him ahead of previous leader John Gadret (AG2r Prévoyance).

Tour of Germany – Stage 4

The 2007 Tour of Germany is held from August 10 thru August 18.

The 4th stage of the Tour is a 183.8km ride from Singen to Sonthofen with a Category 2 climb whose summit lies 17 kilometres from the finish line. Apart from this obstacle it's a reasonably flat stage that should allow the peloton to stay together for the majority of the day.

Damiano Cunego (Lampre) took the stage from Davide Rebellin (Gerosteiner) with David López García (Caisse d'Epargne) picking up 3rd place after the 3 of them kicked clear during the final descent of the day. They were part of a 6 man lead group who had made their move ascending the Category 2 climb of Riedbergpass. Also in that group were Levi Leipheimer (Discovery Channel), Robert Gesink (Rabobank) and Rigoberto Uran (Unibet.com). Leipheimer and Gesink gradually lost time on the lead trio on the descent while Uran crashed out in spectacular fashion.

Stage 4 Profile

Stage Summary
A pair of ambitious riders tore off today to try to steal the stage victory. Mariusz Witeck (Team Volksbank) and Piet Rooijakkers (Skil-Shimano) opened up an advantage of in excess of 7 minutes by the time they started the Category 2 climb of Riedbergpass.

But their lead was slashed pretty quickly on an ascent that occasionally kicked up to 16% when Gerolsteiner's Bernhard Kohl launched his first attack. The rest of the peloton tried to respond with the result leaving a group of only 25 riders still together. Towards the top of the mountain pass the lead 6 made their move to draw away from those remaining with Uran taking the points as first man over the top.

Some daring descending from Cunego and Rebellin saw them draw away from Leipheimer and Gesink while Uran overshot a turn less than a kilometre down and was carted off to hospital. Despite working well together Cunego, Rebellin and Lopez Garcia were unable to draw more than 25 seconds in front of the chase group that had swelled to around 50 riders on the way down. However, they still had enough of a lead to fight out the finish taking the first 3 placings just 5 seconds ahead of the rest.

Jens Voigt did enough to keep hold of his yellow jersey for another day heading into the much anticipated Rettenbachferner stage.

A couple of big names have abandoned the Tour with Fabian Cancellara and Andy Schleck (Team CSC) both out, Schleck still feeling the effects of an allergic reaction that left him with vomiting attacks.

Trofeo Matteotti

The 62nd Trofeo Matteotti (Cat. 1.1) race was held on Sunday, 12 August 2007.

The course covered a distance of 188.5km comprising of 13 laps of 14.5km around the town of Pescara on the Adriatic coast. The winner of the day was Filippo Pozzato (Liquigas) who won in a tight finish from Alessandro Bertolini (Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni) and Luca Mazzanti (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare). This is Pozzato's second Trofeo Matteotti victory having won before in 2003.

138 riders would start the race but only 51 were destined to finish with the 3 climbs on each lap taking their toll in a cumulative build up of torture for tiring riders on a hot day. Despite the best efforts of the teams with strong sprinters to keep the field together, a constant string of attacks would keep the pressure well and truly on.

For a comprehensive report on the way the Trofeo Matteotti unfolded check out the report at Daily Peloton.

Tour de l’Ain – Stage 1

The 2007 Tour de l'Ain is held over 4 days and 4 stages each of them providing some challenge for the competitors.

Stage 1 is a 152.5km race starting in Montluel and ending at Hauteville-Lompnes at the top of the Category 2 climb of the Col de Corlier.

Beat Zberg (Gerolsteiner) made an attack up the Col de Corlier to establish a lead of around 40 seconds before hanging on in the run up to the line and with the first stage of the Tour de l'Ain by 6 seconds from Niels Brouzes (Auber 93) with Giovanni Visconti (Quickstep-Innergetic) in 3rd place.

Adding on the small time bonuses picked up for their placings Zberg takes a 10 second lead from Brouzes with another 2 seconds to Visconti. But the stages continue to look challenging with an Hors Categorie climb and a Category 1 climb still to come.
