Volta a Portugal - Stage 10

The 2007 Volta a Portugal (Tour of Portugal) runs from 4 to 15 August over 10 stages.

A 38.8km Individual Time Trial in Viseu caps off the 2007 Volta a Portugal and it was to be Xavier Tondo’s day.

Coming second in the Time Trial by 9 seconds was of little consequence to Xavier Tondo (LA MSS) because his performance was easily enough for him to win the 2007 Volta a Portugal. He ended up winning by 56″ from 4 time stage winner Candido Barbosa (Liberty Seguros) and 1′31″ ahead of Hector Guerra (Liberty Seguros).

In terms of the stage, Guerra took out the Time Trial, covering the 38.8km in 50′46″ at an average speed of 45.857km/h. Xavier Tondo was second and in 3rd place was David Blanco (Duja-Tavira) 22 seconds behind Guerra.

The other classifications went like this:

Candido Barbosa easily won the Points Classification, the Mountains Classification went to Andre Cardoso (Fercase/Rota Dos Moveis) and the Young Rider was taken out by Tiago Machado (Riberalves-Boavista).

Volta a Portugal - Stage 9

The 2007 Volta a Portugal (Tour of Portugal) runs from 4 to 15 August over 10 stages.

The 9th stage is 154km long, short in distance but long in difficulty, ending in a tough finish at the top of the E category Alto Da Torre. The field also had to cover the Category 1 climb of Alto Do Carrazedo which is situated 50 km from the finish.

The day belonged to Eladio Jimenez (Karpin-Galicia) who rode away from the field up the Alto Da Torre to win the day by 13 seconds from Xavier Tondo (LA MSS). GC leader Candido Barbosa (Liberty Seguros) was unable to match the pace set by Jimenez and dropped back to finish in 3rd place 55 seconds behind.

The win has moved Jimenez into 1st place overall, 33 seconds ahead of Barbosa and 37 seconds ahead of Tondo with the Individual Time Trial to come.

He may have lost the leader’s jersey but the points classification is safely in Candido Barbosa’s keeping with an unassailable 90 point lead.

The Mountains Classification on the other hand has suddenly close right up to a margin of only 1 point with Andre Cardoso (Fercase/Rota Dos Moveis) managing to cling to his lead. The points Jimenez picked up by being first over the Category 1 Alto Do Carrazedo and the Alto Da Torre rocketed him up the classification standings.

A battle within the race was being fought out in the Young Rider classification with Tiago Machado (Riberalves-Boavista) only losing 53″ to John-Lee Augustyn (Barloworld) to now have a lead of 1′ 12″.

Volta a Portugal - Stage 8

The 2007 Volta a Portugal (Tour of Portugal) runs from 4 to 15 August over 10 stages.

The 8th stage in the Volta a Portugal (perhaps more aptly titled the Volta a Barbosa) was a 157km ride from Aveiro to São João da Madeira, over another course that should suit the sprinters.

As has been the case 3 times before, the stage winner was Candido Barbosa who took out a large bunch sprint from Marco Bandiera (Lampre-Fondital) and Paride Grillo (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare). The win served to increase his lead in the Overall GC to 27 seconds and also gives him a massive 57 point lead in the Points Classification.

The Mountains Classification remained largely unchanged at the top of the list with Andre Cardoso (Fercase/Rota Dos Moveis) unable to secure any points but Barbosa, his nearest rival, only added 2 points.

The Young Rider Classification is still headed by Tiago Machado (Riberalves-Boavista) who still holds a 2′05″ lead over John-Lee Augustyn (Barloworld)

Volta a Portugal - Stage 7

The 2007 Volta a Portugal (Tour of Portugal) runs from 4 to 15 August over 10 stages.

The 7th stage in the Volta a Portugal was 168km from Lixa to Gondomar, over a course that would be more suitable to the sprinters after a couple of mountain stages.

In the end the stage came down to a bunch sprint in which around 20 riders contested with Paride Grillo (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare) prevailing for his second stage win. He relegated Mikhaylo Khalilov (Ceramica Flaminia) to second while yellow jersey leader Candido Barbosa (Liberty Seguros) picked up some valuable time bonuses with his 3rd placing. He was given even more of a bonus when the GC second place holder Eladio Jimenez (Karpin-Galicia) was unable to stay in touch with the pace of the sprint and allowed a 4 second gap to open up.

The leader of the Mountains Classification, Andre Cardoso (Fercase/Rota Dos Moveis) again increased his lead being first over the first Category 3 climb of the day and is now 20 points clear of Candido Barbosa.

Paride Grillo has managed to drag back a few points for the Points Classification competition thanks to his stage victory but is still 48 points behind Barbosa with only 3 stages left.

The Young Rider Classification is still headed by Tiago Machado (Riberalves-Boavista) who still holds a 2′05″ lead over John-Lee Augustyn (Barloworld)

Volta a Portugal - Stage 6

The 2007 Volta a Portugal (Tour of Portugal) runs from 4 to 15 August over 10 stages.

The 6th stage runs from Celorico de Basto to Mondim de Basto, a course that runs in a big loop and, more importantly, a course that travels over some serious climbs.

Following the rest day, the field got underway from Celorico de Basto and it was Eladio Jimenez (Karpin-Galicia) who was able to pull away from the pack on the final climb and take the stage victory, winning by 6 seconds from José Azevedo (Benfica) and the triple stage winning yellow jersey wearer Candido Barbosa (Liberty Seguros) who fought grimly to only lose 11 seconds for the day. The victory has moved Jimenez up to second place on the GC 9 seconds beind Barbosa.

The Mountains Classification saw Andre Cardoso (Fercase/Rota Dos Moveis) increase his lead when he won the climb up the Category 1 Monte Do Viso as well as a couple more up the Category 3 Portela St Eulália. He is 15 points clear of Candido Barbosa.

The only points available in today’s stage were those picked up over the finish line plus a couple of sprints that were taken out by the day’s escapees, so Barbosa has continued his commanding hold on that jersey, 57 points clear of Jimenez.

The Young Rider Classification is still headed by Tiago Machado (Riberalves-Boavista) who holds a 2′05″ lead over John-Lee Augustyn (Barloworld)

Volta a Portugal - Stage 5

The 2007 Volta a Portugal (Tour of Portugal) runs from 4 to 15 August over 10 stages.

The 5th stage is a 167.7km run from Felgfuires to Fafe and, apart from 1 climb of note (Alto Covide) it falls so far from the finish that it should prove to be another stage that ends in a group sprint.

It’s turning into the Candido Barbosa show as, for the third straight day he took the honours in a bunch sprint. Barbosa edged out Antonio Bucciero (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare) with Bruno Neves (LA MSS) back in 3rd place. Everyone in the overall GC top ten were in attendance in the lead bunch so, apart from line bonuses to Barbosa, the GC remains pretty well unchanged.

Barbosa has also extended his Points Classification to a very handy 41 points from Paride Grillo (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare) to be leading by 16points. The top of the Mountain Classification remains unchanged with Andre Cardoso (LA MSS) still 3 points ahead Celestino Pinho.

Tiago Machado (Riberalves-Boavista) maintains his Young Rider Classification lead over John-Lee Augustyn (Barloworld).

Volta a Portugal - Stage 4

The 2007 Volta a Portugal (Tour of Portugal) runs from 4 to 15 August over 10 stages.

The 4th stage is the longest stage of the Tour covering a distance of 222.1km from Guarda to Santo Tirso. With two Category 2 two Category 3 climbs to overcome, and with the finish at the top of the last climb, it was going to come down to who the strongest rider in the group was going to be. For the second day in a row that person turned out to be Candido Barbosa (Liberty Seguros) who prevailed by 1 second over Eladio Jimenez (Karpin-Galicia).

Although Martin Garrido was with the lead group as they began the final climb, he was unable to match Barbosa over the final few kilometres and ended up losing 25 seconds to him, which also means that Barbosa has taken over the lead in the overall GC. Barbosa now holds a 10 second lead over David Blanco (Duja-Tavira) with Xavier Tondo (LA MSS) in 3rd place only 1 second further back.

The Points Classification is also headed by Candido Barbosa, moving past Paride Grillo (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare) to be leading by 16points. Picking up points in every climb of the day, Andre Cardoso (LA MSS) has moved into the lead of the Mountains Classification holding a 3 point advantage over Celestino Pinho.

In the Young Rider Classification Tiago Machado (Riberalves-Boavista) has tightened his grip on the lead after another strong day which saw him home in 10th place for the stage and 5th place overall.

It turned out to be a home win as Candido Barbosa (Liberty Seguros) took first place over Danail Petrov (Benfica) with David Blanco (Duja-Tavira) in 3rd place.

The top of the GC was unchanged with Martin Garrido (Duja-Tavira) maintaining his 6 second lead over Xavier Tondo (LA MSS). The big casualty of the day was Paride Grillo (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare) who started in 3rd place but lost 7 minutes. Moving up into 3rd place was Spaniard Hector Guerra (Liberty Seguros).

Grillo still heads the Points Classification with a 9 point lead over Barbosa, while in the Mountains Classification we have been given an idea about who may be the true contenders with Celestino Pinho (Barbot-Halcon) jumping to the top courtesy of his 2nd place over the Penhas Douradas. First over the summit was Jacek Morajko (Riberalves-Boavista) and he has moved into 2nd place in the classification.

Tiago Machado (Riberalves-Boavista) maintains his lead in the Young Rider Classification, but it has increased to 24 seconds with the next placed rival being Francesco Gavazzi (Lampre-Fondital).

Volta a Portugal - Stage 2

The 2007 Volta a Portugal (Tour of Portugal) 4 - 15 August over 10 stages.

Stage 2 is a 169km stage from Vila Viçosa - Castelo Branco. Although there was an early break of 6 riders in the stage, they were unable to stay away from the peloton who reeled them in to ensure another mass sprint finish. In the sprint it was Spaniard Francisco Jose Pacheco Torres (Barbot-Halcon) who took the honours ahead of Paride Grillo (Ceramica Panaria-Navigare) and Martin Garrido (Duja-Tavira).

Along the way, Paride Grillo was able to extend his lead in the Points Classification, picking up bonus points in the run to the line. The main Mountains Classification points were shared by Celestino Pinho (Barbot-Halcon) and Oleg Chuzhda (Fuerteventura-Canarias) who were first and second over both climbs, swapping placings in each. They now sit at the top of the classification.

The leading Young Rider is Portuguese rider Tiago Machado (Riberalves-Boavista) who is 6 seconds ahead of Oleg Chuzhda (Fuerteventura-Canarias)
